85 riders from 20 nations landed in Ischgl, Austria, for the most awaited youth snowboard event of the season: the 2013 Volkl World Rookie Finals. The event started with a sunny training day in a perfectly shaped Ischgl snowpark consisting of 3 big table top with kickers, a huge hip and a final multi-rail obstacle. A big surprise was announced during the first day of the event: the winner will be awarded with a wildcard to the first Air & Style event of the next winter season.

All the riders had a great first day on the mountain, with perfect snowpark and weather conditions, showcasing a high level of riding already during the trainings. According to the World Rookie Tour philosophy, the event program included a bunch of life style activities in order to create social and education moments where riders can live unique experiences.

The afternoon program of the first day also included a Kopfarbeit Workshop with mental handicap people from local organization “Lebenshilfe Tirol” and the Gummi Love Workshop about sexual education for the rookies only (not for groms!). Among the many other side activities of the upcoming days there will be an introduction to the “History of Snowboarding” by Bob Klein from USA, and a Workshop with “Viva con Agua”, a charitable organization based in St. Pauli, Hamburg (Germany), campaigning for clean drinking water worldwide.

We have a long time partnership with the World Rookie Tour which helped many talented rising stars to get invitations to world class events.” said Air & Style founder Andrew Hourmont visiting the event. “That’s why we will be happy to award the 2013 World Rookie Champion with a wildcard to the first Air & Style event of the next winter season” ended Andrew.

2013 Indy Park Jam Rookie Fest

The “Indy Park Jam Rookie Fest” kicked off on 20th of March 2013 at Nekoma, Japan where the world could witness Japan’s young and restless rising stars from Japan. 50 Rookies and Groms were ready to rock the slopes with the opportunity to win a ticket for the upcoming World Rookie Finals in Ischgl, Austria.

“Indy Park Jam” is a special formula from the ex-Olympian Michiyo Hahsimoto, When she stopped competing after Salt Lake Olympic and got a kid, she came up with the idea of a specialized training camp for young snowboarders – this was 10 years ago and called “Kirara Kamp”.
Some kids from the camp developed into world class snowboard pros like Yuki KADONO who won the “Oakley Air&Style” at Beijing China early this season.
This year’s course included a. 14m kicker, followed by a 15m kicker, Down Rail Kink Box, Down Rail Kink End or Straight Rail and ended with a Straight Down Rail or Straight Down Box.
Groms and Rookies were competing and the two best runs counted for the ranking. The IJC judges picked out the best 12 Boys and 6 Girls for the final two runs which Reira Iwabuchi (Girls) and Keita Inamura (Boys) won.
Winning run of Reira IWABUCHI:

Excitement at the 2013 Bulgarian Rookie Fest

All Bulgarian future snowboard talents gathered last weekend, on the 23rd of March 2013 in Pamporovo (BUL) for the Bulgarian Rookie Fest. It was the first edition of the Bulgarian stop being part of the World Rookie Tour.

2013 Bulgarian Rookie Fest from Board.tv on Vimeo.

The riders’ excitement about the Bulgarian Rookie Fest was huge – 12 riders entered the nicely shaped slopestyle run of the FunPark and hit it hard. Mentored by the Bulgarian national team rider Loziyo Dimitrov, the Bulgarian slopestyle champion Georgi Georgiev and all other young riders performed to their best and showed an amazing competition.

With the missing Petar Geosharkov on the slope, Simeon Mitrev from Borobord Team stand out with a clean landed bs. 720 with tail fish from the 16 M. kickers. Moni – as his friends call him – is 14 years old and had already been riding the national championships in the Men class where he was ranked in the top five. The other Bulgarian riders showed so much potential that it will be not a surprise if some of them will join the World Rookie Tour in the next season.

During the weekend, the first line of Pamporovo FunPark was set with a BigAir Bag, so the coaches have had a good time training with their riders under the Bulgarian Sun. While the first Bulgarian Rookie Fest is done, all eyes are focused on Ischgl, Austria for the Völkl World Rookie Finals (3.-7. of April 2013) where Bulgaria will cross the fingers for Simeon Mitrev .

Yabuli hosts World Championships of Snowboarding 2016

The World Snowboard Federation and TTR Pro Snowboarding announce host city of next World Championships of Snowboarding: Snowboarding and its lifestyle set to expand in China.

Oslo, Norway – March 8th, 2013

“After the great success of the first World Championships of Snowboarding (WCS) 2012 in Oslo, the next edition will take place in China’s most renowned winter sport resort Yabuli, in the Northeast of the country, between February 21 and March 13 2016, in the disciplines Slopestyle (F/M), Halfpipe (F/M) and for the first time, Big Air for men. TTR Pro Snowboarding and the World Snowboard Federation (WSF) announced this in conjunction with the 6Star event The Arctic Challenge in Oslo today. In a 12-month bidding process, Yabuli resort was able to convince TTR and WSF of its capability and commitment to realize the event in 2016. TTR and WSF are both the event’s organizer and rights owners. Yabuli resort received a unanimous positive vote from the board members of TTR/WSF. The currently existing sportive, touristic and technical infrastructure in combination with the unsurpassed know-how of the World Snowboard Tour’s execution of Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Air events, will ensure optimal conditions for athletes, media and spectators on-site and worldwide.”

Yabuli is China’s major winter sports resort. It is located in the north-eastern province of Heilongjiang, a two hour train ride away from the province capital of Harbin, a city of 3.5 million inhabitants, world famous for its annual ice sculpture festival. Thanks to its high snow reliability, Yabuli is blessed with a rich tradition in winter sports, especially considering that China is a country rather new to winter sports. Yabuli has all necessary facilities lined up for hosting the World Championships of Snowboarding, a vivid snowboarding community and substantial experience in hosting major international sport contests, such as Winter Universiade or World Cup events.

Marco Sampaoli, President of World Snowboard Federation commented:

„The second edition of the World Championships of Snowboarding will showcase the full spectrum of contemporary freestyle snowboarding at the highest competitive level, also by adding the Big Air discipline. It will be amazing to watch the best riders of our times pushing the limits even further in Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Air. Every rider coming from all around the world to China’s northeast will undoubtedly have a memorable experience. We expect riders from at least 20 countries to make their way to the World Championships. Yabuli winter sports resort’s topography, as well as the enthusiasm and commitment of the responsible people at Yabuli and in the government of Heilongjiang province will make for an awesome Snowboarding Championship environment.“

Reto Lamm, President of TTR Pro Snowboarding commented:

„The decision in favour of Yabuli in China represents a major step forward in our ambition to establish the World Championships of Snowboarding as the world´s most respected snowboarding contest and bring back full control over snowboarding to snowboarders. To have our next World Championships in China is a great chance for snowboarding and a great opportunity to develop one of the most promising growing winter sports markets. As WCS company, and in the name of TTR and WSF, it is important for us to spread the authentic spirit of snowboarding globally – to Yabuli and the Heilongjiang province, and beyond. I am very excited to see snowboarding’s youth lifestyle blend with Chinese culture and I am sure that the WCS 2016 will become a great showcase event for our sport.
Snowboarding has changed winter sports and the youth’s lifestyle around the globe massively and in a positive way over the years. We are aiming to continue that journey in China and other countries still new to the sport. We feel that Yabuli is the best spot in China to start this venture. “

Mr Zhou Yi Yun, General Manager of Yabuli Resort:

‘’We have full confidence that our skill and enthusiasm, combined with the guidance and assistance of TTR and WSF will result in a splendid event in 2016. We would like to say welcome to all the riders, snowboarding fans and everyone present today, to come to Yabuli and witness this great event.’’

Chas Guldemond, World Champion Slopestyle 2012 and Member of the TTR Pro Snowboarding Board, commented:

„I am very excited to go to the WCS in Yabuli! Not only do I get to defend my Slopestyle title, but I can help push the sport of snowboarding in China in a major way. Snowboarding is growing really fast in China. I was able to witness that myself, when I visited for the 3rd edition of Oakley Air & Style in Beijing. With that experience in mind, I don’t see any better place to have the WCS than Yabuli. They have the terrain, support, and are very eager to show this awesome sport to Chinese youth and the rest of the world! “

TTR & Swatch Present “The History of Competitive Snowboarding”

The World Snowboard Tour and Swatch have got together to produce five free episodes documenting some of the highlights from the history of competiting snowboarding.

Scuol, Switzerland – February 29th 2013

For competitive snowboarding, 2013 has been a year for reminiscing and good times; from legends’ sessions at O’Neill Evolution and the historical 20th Anniversary of Air&Style, to a genuine retro look and feel etched all over the Burton European and US Open. We also saw legends like Gian Simmen saying goodbye to the competition scene and moving on to new chapters in their lives.

Why have we felt so nostalgic this season? It might have something to do with the insane amount of progression the sport is currently witnessing; but we would like to stop for a minute, catch our breath and take five from concerning ourselves with the future and dive deeper into the marvellous tale of snowboarding.
It’s a rich narrative, filled with some illustrious characters, such as Tom Sims and Jake Burton who wrote and starred on the first pages. It moves on, with adventurers and immortal heroes like Craig Kelly, Terje Haakonsen and Shaun White. And the story does not end there…

Here at the TTR Pro Snowboarding headquarters, we probably own one of the world’s largest collections of competitive snowboarding footage. From TTR’s inaugural year in 2002 to the Tour’s inclusion of X Games in 2013 and everything in between, we have been there watching and documenting. Over the years we’ve supplied countless producers with some stunning material, and after all that we still found enough left to produce something we thought was missing: a series on the history of competitive snowboarding.

Teaming up with Swatch, we opened our archives, dusted off our historical material and searched for some missing chapters. We asked for help from many partners worldwide for footage to fill any missing gaps, and with that we have produced something truly incredible Our passion for the sport, combined with hard labour and hours spent in the editing room have resulted in a five webisodes series, of which we proudly present number one today.

From Straight Lines to Triple Corks, the History of Competitive Snowboarding” is a remarkable piece, a part of that peculiar sub culture that snowboarding is. It takes us back through some glorious moments in the sport, narrated by the heroes, peeking behind the scenes. At the same time, we feel the series will inspire the viewer to go out and write another few chapters themselves.

In celebration of it all, the World Snowboard Tour has put its efforts in creating an interactive timeline, with the purpose to educate all enthusiasts on where it all began and how it’s still pumping.

Release Dates:

Episode 1 – Humble Beginnings – Friday 1st, March

Episode 2 – Comps Get BIG – Friday 8th, March

Burton Rookie Tour hit the Baltics

The Burton Rookie Tour gathered 57 snowboarders from all Baltic countries for an interesting slopestyle competition won by Karina Vitina, Matis Maltsar, Indrek Tamm, Emils Kaupers and Motiejus Morauskas. Impressive riding level by rookies, chilled out atmosphere, great snowpark and amazing prizes worth more than 2000euro from Burton – thank you all for awesome weekend!!!

While the majority of the riders were slowly getting ready, RXT team from Estonia was already in the park for the warm up and it was worth it: Especially for Matis Maltsar, EST, who won this competition in Men Pro group, leaving behind Valters Osnieks, LAT, in 2nd, Toms Petrusevics, LAT, in 3rd and Janis Sarans, LAT, in 4th place.

It was an unbelievable victory for Indrek Tamm, EST, in Men Open group again, making him the the only rider in Monster Energy Ride in Baltics Tour`13 winning 5 stops in the row ever!

In the women’s group, the audience got to see some hard crashes, but also excellent runs by all riders. However, Karina Vitina, LAT, took the 1st place on the podium again, after having won the Latvian Championship and A.Lembergs Grand Prix the day before. Karina`s victories has definitely moved her up to 1st place in the overall ranking.

The „AERODIUM Fly High” prize – free flight in vertical wind tunnel – went to the rider from Estonia: Jorma Voik, who was noticed by judges by the impressive hight of his jumps!

As the idea of the „Burton Rookie Tour” is to support young talents to become the future pros, the special prize from Burusports shop – Skullcandy headphones – went to the youngest rider from Estonia, RXT team. Another funny award was given to the fastest rider that could run up the slope to get it! In the prize giving, everyone was stoked about Burton goodies and „Burton cheques” worth 1500euro in total to be exchanged to Burton staff in Burusports and other shops in Baltics selling Burton.

Thank you all for coming! Thank you all for making „Burton Rookie Tour” happen! Special thanks go to Burton, Burusports shop, Ventspils and Lemberga hute for hosting event and all other partners that are helping to fullfil the goal of Monster Energy Ride in Baltics Tour`13 this season – more riders, more stops, more prizes and more FUN!
