2012 Protest World Rookie Finals – Day 3 – Rail Jam

The day 3 of the 2012 Protest World Rookie Finals was under snowfalls and fog. Visibility was not enough to use all the obstacles in the slopestyle and, after a coach meeting, it was decided to turn the qualifications into a rail jam session in the last part of the slope. Check here pictures, video and rank from the Day3.

Tons of sick tricks, fun and pictures for everybody. Katarzyna Rusin from Polland resulted the best in the Rookie Girl category while Taelor Mettingley from USA among the Grom Girls. Among the boys, Rowen Coultas from Great Britain was the best Grom while japanese shredder Yuki Kadono won the Rookie category.

Moreover the Day 3 of the 2012 Protest World Rookie Finals hosted another very special workshop reserved to the oldest riders of the event. The topic was “safe sex” and it was organized by Gummi Love. Educational games and other presentation introduced the concept of “safe sex” to the oldest partecipants of the Protest World Rookie Finals. International pro snowboarder Nicholas Muller filmed a special video messagge for the World Rookie Fest riders about the goodness to have a save and smart way to have “party”.

West Coast Rookie Fest – Kidwell Classic

Competitive snowboarding is about to change in North America. After nine years of successful events in Europe, Asia and the Southern Hemisphere, it is now time to bring the World Rookie Tour to North America for the second time in a season. Legendary pro snowboarder Terry Kidwell sees a great opportunity to create a series of events that will serve as the next level beyond amateur competitions.

“Currently, there is a large gap between USASA level events and the top tier pro events such as the US Open, Dew Tour events and X Games. “Right now it is a very confusing and difficult system for the young riders who have goals of becoming a top tier pro”, says Kidwell, a 4 time World Champion and known globally as “The Father of Freestyle”. “We’re filling the gap with events that cater to the rider who has a focus on fun, but also wants to follow a path to greater heights in their personal snowboarding endeavors. The World Rookie Tour is great because they really treat the riders well and give the kids a taste of what it is like to be a pro.”

At previous World Rookie Tour events, workshops on avalanche safety, how to be a pro snowboarder and interaction with people from local communities have shown the rookies that there is also a side to snowboarding that has a real, human touch. For example, at last year’s World Rookie Finals in Ischgl, Austria, local mentally handicapped people came to the event and interacted with the rookies, sharing personal stories and painting snowboards together. The result is helping kids understand that snowboarding is fun and can be a passion in life, but also that there are real, human aspects to life as well.

Terry Kidwell has had a vision to create unique courses for quite some time and the World Rookie Tour is the perfect place for Terry to realize his vision. “I have always wanted to build courses and pipes with a different eye. I’d like to see the riders utilize the whole slope in a slopestyle, not just a straight jump and rail line, as we see today. Kirkwood is stepping up and shares the same vision of creating an iconic event with a unique course design that should be a benchmark for all future events.”

The winners in each division will earn a spot in the Protest World Rookie Finals 2012, held in Ischgl, Austria from April 11-15, so make sure you have your passport in order because the winners will receive at least

Shred Down Austrian Masters 2012

The Austrian Snowboard Halfpipe Masters are determined! With wonderful weather on Nordkette Innsbruck Jocki Koeffler won the title of the ‚Shred Down Austrian Master 2012’ halfpipe champion!

Holding true to the motto „never change a winning team“ the co-operation between the independent Austrian Snowboard Association n.asa, the famous snowboard crew Ästhetiker and the guys from Boardplay continues. These three famous institutions of the local snowboard community are presenting the event for the fourth time. The Shred Down Austrian Masters stands out amongst the crowd of snowboard contests because of the range of starters, the set up and the side events.

Based on two legendary contests, the ‘Shred Down’ and the ‘Austrian Masters’, one extraordinary event was developed three years ago.
The halfpipe event of the SDAM 2012 could not have been better! The Pipe was hard to ride because of the warm temperatures however the riders delivered a fantastic show! Many senior riders were present and especially Jocki Koeffler with his routine was able to give a great performance! He showed impressive runs and especially his last one with a FS 900, BS 540 and FS 720 combination convinced the judges. This run not only gave him the title of the ‘Shred Down Austrian Masters 2012’halfpipe in the men category but also due to his age the title of the ‘Shred Down Austrian Masters 2012 halfpipe legend’. On second place was Manuel Bernert from Tirol and on third Christoph Weber-

Thoresen from Germany. Known riders like Steve Gruber, Paul Burger or Wolle Nyvelt were also competing and especially Max Ploetzeneder was able to deliver a run like he did back in the days.

Max Kraljkos from Slovenia won in the rookie category and the ‘Shred Down Austrian Master 2012’ halfpipe rookie is Alois Lindmoser. The best woman was Helen Nadig from Switzerland followed by Carmen Waldner and Sandy Gecek. The ‘Shred Down Austrian Master 2012’ halfpipe rookie woman is Birgit Rofner from Tirol.

Very promising is the SDAM Slopestyle Contest in the Boarders Playground in Westendorf next weekend, 9th to 11th March! A high level of riding can be expected not only as it is the final of the Austria Cup Tour. Riders like Herby Thaler or the local shred head Simon Pircher are keen on taking over Matthias Weissenbachers Slopestyle title. The Shred Down Party in the Alpenrosensaal in Westendorf on 10th March with ‘Featurcast’ behind the turntables is a special celebration nobody should miss!

Wildcards are up for grabs at the SDAM 2012 for the upcoming freestyle snowboard events in Austria in March 2012, known as the ‘Austrian Spring’. For the Vans Wängl Tängl in Mayrhofen from 17th to 24th March an Ästhetiker Jury will be on site in Innsbruck and Westendorf to select a SDAM Team to take part in the Wängl Tängl qualifications. For the ‘Spring Battle’ in Flachauwinkl from 28th to 31st March one wildcard is given to the Overall Winner Halfpipe/Slopestyle and one to the Winner Slopestyle. Additionally the best Rookies, born ‘96 and younger, are scouted and the 3 ‘most impressive Austrian rookies’ are invited to the Red Bull UpSpring in Oberstdorf from 13th to 18th March 2012.

Brought to you by Jesse Fulton and the crew at 365 sports, this event focused on giving riders 18 and under the opportunity to compete against others of their age and skill level. All this while vying for a chance at competing in Austria at the world rookie finals.

Located in the area that up until this season housed the resort’s halfpipe, this new slopestyle course was a perfect venue for Canada’s up and comers. The course breakdown was a good mix of rails and jumps with something for almost everyone. From the drop-in, the first feature was a set of stairs complete with two urban rail options, after that there was an “L” shaped bank/hip complete with corrugated pipe coping. This feature changed the rider’s direction and led them in to the jump line. Two solid jumps led into the bottom feature which housed a quarter pipe/hip combo on riders left and a corrugated pipe pointing to the clouds to give riders one last chance to impress the panel of legendary judges.

When all the riders had had their chances at glory, the judges had 20 minutes to tabulate and confer with each other before the prizes were handed out. After a very strong showing all day, Cole Cummins was awarded for his efforts. Cole’s final run earned him the best style award for the day, based on a backside 720 tweaked hard, as well as the top spot on the podium and an all-expense paid trip to Austria to compete against the best rookies in the world.

One of the great things about having a passion like snowboarding is seeing that same passion in reflected in kids. With events like this, we as snowboarders should all be stoked that our sport has progressed to a level where companies and athletes understand that giving back and supporting the next generation (or in Terry’s case, the next three) plays a huge role in the future of all things snowboarding.

Protest Slopestyle Championships Gets a New Home

The countdown is officially on! It’s only three weeks until Protest, the UK’s top boardwear brand, stages the highly anticipated Protest Slopestyle Championships at The BRITS 2012. The UK’s elite are gearing up and getting ready to bring their A-Game to the all-new and inventive Slopestyle course.

Cementing their reputation as the Godfathers of freestyle, Laax has built a new world-class freestyle area, Snow & Park, which will host the Protest Slopestyle Championships. Situated in the area between the renowned Laax superpipe and the brand new six-seater chair lift the innovative new slopestyle course, which also hosted the European Open, will give riders a new playground to showcase their ever expanding bag of tricks. Last year saw Protest rider Becky Menday just miss out on a podium spot in the women’s overall, but after recently taking gold at the Protest Rookie Fest we have a feeling she’ll be stepping up in 2012.

The 3 Star TTR Protest Freeski Slopestyle Championships kicks off on Thursday 22nd March with the Snowboard Championships finishing the week off in style on Friday 23rd March. In addition to the £3000 prize purse and £1000s of product, Protest is offering the winners of the British Snowboard Slopestyle Championships a trip to Protest surf camp in Fuerteventura. Competitors should pre-register and can find out more here: http://www.the-brits.com/championships/registration.

The BRITS fancy dress is quite rightly the stuff of legend, so get ready to style your Mohawk, pogo to the Pistols and flick everyone the V’s at the Punk Protest Night, in association with Whitelines Magazine. We’re pretty sure the night will end up with an almighty mosh pit of leather-clad stud-wearing punks, but just in case we’ve invited BRITS favourite Christian Stevenson along just to make sure!

Week-packages start from an amazing *£279 and include seven nights’ accommodation, seven day liftpass, festival wristband, and an official BRITS Funi beanie, so don’t delay, get booking! Check out www.the-brits.com for the full week’s schedule and booking details. *411CHF – GBP equivalent may vary with exchange rate.

The BRITS would not be possible without its highly supportive sponsors: Protest, Trespass, Dare2b, Snow+Rock and Nooka. Media partners: Whitelines, Huck, Extreme Sports Channel, Downdays.eu, Ski Club of Great Britain, Metrosnow.co.uk, In The Snow and Snowboardclub.co.uk. Destination partners: Switzerland Tourism and LAAX. Governing Bodies: TTR, AFP, WSF and BSS.
