A week of nonstop ski and snowboard action at Schilthorn, Switzerland has concluded with Valentino Guseli, the World Rookie Tour Grom Slopestyle Champion 2019, soaring to new heights and setting a remarkable snow sports record. On a “Perfect Hip” built with the express mission of sending riders sky-high safely, Guseli, with his exceptional skill and daring, established a new highest-air world record.
Valentino Guseli (AUS, SNB) flew to a height of 11.5 meters (37.7 feet), topping Christian Haller’s record of 11.3 meters (37.1 feet), also from 2016.
“I was just going as big as I could,” said Guseli. “I’d say it’s the biggest hip I ever hit. And the thing that’s gnarly about it is, when you first hit it, you already have to go big.”
The three new world records, including Valentino Guseli’s remarkable achievement, alongside Kim Gubser on skis and Brooke D’Hondt on a snowboard, are among the highlights of a weeklong session that saw a crew of 40 invited riders from 13 different countries tackle a custom course of features beyond the Perfect Hip.
“The mission of Swatch Nines is to provide a platform for athletes to express their creativity and push their limits in a safe and non-competitive environment. The fact that we’re able to break records like these shows that we’re doing something right. I can’t believe what the athletes were able to achieve on this setup. It’s the most gratifying thing to see something that you’ve been planning for so long finally come to fruition and exceed all your expectations.” – Nico Zacek, founder of Swatch Nines
The best snowboard’s future stars from around the world gathered at the Kitzsteinhorn in Zell am See-Kaprun from 17th to 22nd March 2024 for the World Rookie Snowboard Finals to determine the 2024 Snowboard Champions. 106 riders from 23 nations cavorted in the Kitzsteinhorn Snowpark and showed that the future of the sport is in good hands. Slopestyle– With the best weather and parking conditions, the decision in Slopestyle was on Wednesday. In the rookies (U19) category, 15-year-old Norwegian Fabian Hertzberg impressed with a frontside and backside 1080 on the kicker and confidently won the World Rookie Champion Slopestyle title. In the girls’ category, the Chinese Shirui Xiong prevailed and thus brought the first World Rookie Champion title to China. In the Grom category (U15), the Japanese Hakuto Kitayama and the Belgian Sky Remans were crowned winners.

Success across the board for Team Korea, as Lee Jio (Rookie Boys) and his compatriot Lee Suo (Grom Boys) beamed from the top spot on the podium. Among the girls, the Swiss Lura Wick (SUI) triumphed in the Rookie Girls category and won the World Rookie Tour title for the second time in a row, although in the U15 category in 2023. The American Boday Gabriella (USA) won this.

Head judge Iztok Sumatic was enthusiastic: “My highlight of the 2024 edition was the halfpipe competition. For both the girls and the boys, the top four places in particular showed demanding riding at a very high level. It’s best to memorize the names now because we’ll be hearing a lot more about these talents.”
Aside from the sporting competitions, the World Rookie Finals offered a variety of supporting events, from a tattoo workshop to a climate change workshop by the WSF (World Snowboard Federation) and POW (Protect Our Winters), to promote awareness of environmental protection and sustainability among kids and teenagers.

For the first time since 2017, the World Rookie Tour is making a stop in the beautiful resort of Pamporovo – Bulgaria. A legendary destination that for 10 years, hosted the famous Pamporovo Freestyle Open (PFO) slopestyle event with a festival atmosphere, it was ranked 4-star TTR in 4 of its editions. The resort is set in the southern Rhodope Mountains at an altitude of 1620 meters above sea level. The highest peak in the area, Snezhanka Peak at 1928 m, is several hundred meters above the resort and hosts Snezhanka Tower. There is a reason why people are calling Pamporowo the Pearl of the Rodopi mountain. The ancient pine forest, the massive amounts of snowfall and the crystal clean air make the name of the resort speak for itself. The modern approach and the good vibes at the resort, these days, are the perfect combination for a proper World Rookie Tour event. It will not take long until Pamporovo gets back on the world freestyle map, so don’t miss the chance to become part of history and be here with us during these booming times!!!

On February 10th, 2024, the Riderspark at Donovaly became the epicentre of adrenaline-fueled action as it was the host of the Snowboard & Freeski Slovakia Rookie Fest, the official World Rookie Tour stop. Drawing 23 riders from Slovakia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Georgia, the competition showed some cool tricks and new young freestyle talents in the heart of the beautiful Slovakian mountains.
Despite the challenges posed by the weather in the days leading up to the event, including rain that tested the organizers’ resolve, the competition persevered, delivering an unforgettable experience for all the participants. The dedication and hard work of the organizers ensured that the event proceeded smoothly, despite last-minute changes to the schedule. The races should be on Saturday and Sunday, but with the coming bad weather, the organizer changed the program and the WRT took place on Saturday, both Freeski and Snowboard.
The competition itself exceeded expectations, with riders pushing the limits of their skills and creativity. Among the competitors, several young talents emerged, showcasing remarkable skills and potential for the future of the sport. In the skiing categories, Revaz Burduli from Georgia claimed victory in the Rookies category, while Filip Štrba won the Grom category.
Meanwhile, in snowboarding, Zuzana Machowska took the top spot in the Girls category, with Tadeáš Nedielka, winning the Boys Rookies and Ricco Nawarkiewicz-Wisniewski winning the Boys Grom category.
The event also received a significant boost from the participation of Slovakian World Cup riders, Samuel Jaroš in snowboarding and Michael Oravec in freeskiing. Their presence provided aspiring young riders with the opportunity to learn from the best, inspiring them to reach new heights in their riding journeys. Both, the World Cup riders and kids, were riding together and the kids could experience something unusual – to ride & learn from their idols.
Despite the challenges posed by the weather and last-minute changes, the event at Donovaly was a resounding success for Slovakian freestyle, leaving a lasting impression on every participant, including the organisers and everyone, who helped to make true the World Rookie Tour in Slovakia.

The current conditions do not allow us to provide a quality course for the competition. We waited and hoped for snowmaking until the last moment, but it failed yesterday as well.
